Will The Post Office Fail?

It doesn't seem like they should be losing  money, what with all the junk mail we get every day, like it or not.  But they are and, as usual, Congress is standing in the way of improving the USPS' bottom line.  The taxpayers are on the hook for it all, but there are proposals from within the postal service and in Congress that would help a lot.  Guess who is against rocking this union boat?  Go to the head of the class if the first name you thought of rhymes with Osama.

The Heritage Foundation has studied this problem and has a really thoughtful piece on it that you can find  here.

I could stand not getting any bills on Saturdays and not having to ask my good neighbor to retrieve mail from our box on those weekends we are out of town, lest the burglars tip to the fact that our goods are there for the taking.  It would also remove one day a week from the fun and games the local teenaged miscreants have for snatching mail and spreading it all over the vacant lots.  Or depriving identity thieves another opportunity to  get those credit card applications that keep coming no matter what.

Seriously, I don't see the drawback to stopping Saturday service.  When telephones came into widespread use, the Post Office stopped delivering mail twice a day.  Remember that?  Me, neither but that is one big reason they stopped.  Now with unlimited cell phone minutes on the weekends, internet blogs, email and the like, what reason is there for it?  Not the total answer, but it will save a sheckle or two.

Not being able to lay off some the more deserving slugs in powder blue shirts and striped shorts due to union rules really rankles me.  When the military has a reduction in force, where is their union protecting them?  Oh, they don't have one?  Well, that settles it, then.  Ban the union workers from being postal employees.  Didn't Reagan settle all that with the defunct PATCO?
